It may be the defining cultural artifact of our times, but a new exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery shows us that the selfie is nothing new.
From Selfie to Self-Expression explores the history of the selfie and its creative potential – from the old masters to the present day. Classic works from Rembrandt and Van Gogh are showcased alongside iconic modern day selfies and self-portraits by the likes of Frida Kahlo, Tracey Emin and Cindy Sherman.
From the sublime to the bizarre – it’s an in depth, non-judgemental look at our ingenuity in the social media age.
Reprising the spirit of the YBA movement 25 years later, the Saatchi have also teamed up with 10 exciting young British photographers to create new works using a smartphone. Moving beyond the selfie, these images focus on the world outside us – including portraits from the Ukraine by Christopher Nunn and beautiful street photography by Matt Stuart.
