Milei: A Blueprint for Europe?

Driving the day...
President Javier Milei just
scored a sweeping victory in
Argentina’s midterm elections. In yesterday’s vote, his party,
La Libertad Avanza, won nearly 41% of the vote, taking 13 of 24 Senate
seats and 64 of the 127 lower-house seats that were contested.
U.S president Donald Trump was one of many right-wing leaders to
congratulate Milei, writing on social media that the chainsaw-wielding
Argentinian president was “making us all look good.”
This sentiment was echoed across the European Right, too. Hungarian prime
minister Viktor Orbán celebrated Milei’s “remarkable victory,” and noted
that “Hungary and Argentina share a deep respect for freedom and
sovereignty.”
Italy’s Matteo Salvini said the victory was hard-won “against everything
and everyone,” in particular the mainstream political establishment.
Similarly, Alice Weidel, co-leader of the Alternative for Germany, praised
Milei for refuting “all those lies that tried to reinterpret Milei’s
success and Argentina’s transformation as a failure.”
Right-wingers in Europe may well hope to use Milei and Argentina as a
blueprint for their own nations. Sweden Democrats MEP Charlie Weimers
praised Milei’s “big” win and asked whether “European politicians can
eventually be inspired to pursue policies that lead to long-term
prosperity?” If voters can reward radical deregulation and populist,
anti-bureaucratic zeal there, why not here?
Can the European Right replicate Milei’s success?
