ArtBasel Miami Beach Sales Report
Below is our consolidation of the ArtBasel Miami Beach sales reported this week. It’s followed by the fair’s own comprehensive reporting. The entire report will remain open to readers for the day. After that, it will be available to AMMpro subscribers. Feel free to subscribe to read it and cancel as you see fit.
The Master, Judd Tully, had these sales:
Skarstedt Gallery
- George Condo’s exuberant “Figure on a Red Field” from 2016, scaled at 96 by 76 inches and comprised of acrylic and metallic paint, charcoal, pastel and oil pigment stick, selling for $700,000
- Barbara Kruger’s grimacing, pugilistic “Look for the Moment When Pride Becomes Contempt” from 1993, at 48 by 96 inches, going for $600,000
- David Salle, “Pontiac” from 2016 in oil, acrylic, charcoal, archival digital print and pigment transferred on linen, measuring 60 by 96 inches, sold for $275,000
Van de Weghe Gallery,
- Dimitris Mavromattis, the peripatetic and globetrotting collector who just bought a large-scale Rudolf Stingel painting from the gallery for $2.3 million, though the painting was harbored in New York.
- sold several works including a Donald Judd “Untitled” Swiss Box progression from 1989 in steel gray for $700,000
- an early figurative drawing by David Hockney from 1965, depicting a couple seated on a couch, for $100,000
Marc Selwyn Gallery
- sold Mel Bochner’s early wall drawing “Imagine the Enclosed Area Blue” from 1969 (or actually the right to reproduce it), to an American collector for $300,000. It was executed here at 48 by 48 inches for each of the applied squares.
Lisson Gallery
- sold a lesser-known but rather fantastic abstraction by the late Ray Colmer, “Untitled” from 1971. The 50-by-50-inch composition of diffused, horizontal stripes sold in the region of $50-75,000.
Gagosian Gallery
- Andreas Gursky, “SH III” from 2014, a 98-by-140 inch inkjet print from the artist’s super hero series featuring Batman. It sold in the region of 500,000 euros.
- The gallery also sold works by Urs Fischer, Cecily Brown, Rudolf Stingel and John Currin, but prices for those works were not available.
Van Doren Waxter
- sold a number of early figurative and abstract works on paper by Richard Diebenkorndating from circa 1951 to 1968, including “Untitled” from 1960-65 in ink and charcoal on paper and measuring 14 by 17 inches. All of the works including this nude study sold for under $100,000.
