The exhibition CHRONORAMA. Photographic Treasures of the 20th Century at the Helmut Newton Foundation is coming to an end...

The exhibition CHRONORAMA. Photographic Treasures of the 20th Century takes us on a journey through seven decades, where we can follow the transition from illustration to photography and witness the rapid aesthetic changes in the turbulent 20th century. New tastes in fashion, architecture or interior design, radical transformations in the world of art - all these developments we can encounter here in over 250 works.

The exhibits presented, created between the 1910s and late 1970s, originate from the remarkable Condé Nast archives, part of which the Pinault Collection acquired in 2021.

Naturally, Helmut Newton and his works are also part of this remarkable collection, as he contributed extensively to Condé Nast magazines like Vogue and Vanity Fair from the 1950s onward. Most of Newton’s fashion photographs featured in this show have not been previously exhibited in Berlin. Furthermore, the exhibition brings together an impressive array of Helmut Newton’s contemporaries and predecessors, including trailblazing photographers like Diane ArbusCecil BeatonDavid BaileyJohn DeakinRobert FrankEvelyn HoferHorst P. HorstPeter HujarWilliam KleinLisette ModelUgo MulasIrving PennBert Stern and
Deborah Turbeville

The success of the exhibition is also not only reflected high numbers of visitors but also in the various reviews in the German media, such as Süddeutsche Zeitung, Tagesspiegel, Berliner Morgenpost as well as the feature section of the FAZ. In addition, the numerous press reviews in international magazines such as Eva (BG), Playboy (NL) or Gala (GR) or French Fries (IT) should also be highlighted in this context. Especially worth mentioning is the in-depth article in the latest print version of the Milan based magazine Panorama.

Now, our special exhibition is coming to an end and the official countdown has begun: just one week is left for visitors to view the exhibition before it closes on May 20, 2024!

For all of those, who are still not going to make it in person, we offer a wonderful alternative: As a special highlight visitors now have the opportunity to view the exhibition as a digital guided tour in form of a VR film on our website. Since 2019, the HNF has been producing these virtual reality films in cooperation with Art Visit. So far, the museum is the only institution worldwide to provide such a service.
