View in browser 03 February 2024 The Month Ahead We’re already entering the second month of 2024, which is shaping up to be a major year for art world anniversaries. Museums across Europe and the US are marking the centenary of Surrealism and 150 years of Impressionism. It is also 75 years since the death of James Ensor, a painter whose pastel-hued compositions blended elements of grotesque satire and nightmarish, surreal imagery. He remains somewhat underappreciated outside of his native Belgium, which is celebrating with a slew of exhibitions. This month Tate Modern opens its highly-anticipated Yoko Ono retrospective, chronicling her most famous conceptual works, participatory performances and videos, as well as lesser-known projects. In New York, the Bard Graduate Center has organised a similarly sweeping exhibition devoted to Sonia Delaunay, the great abstract painter, designer and multi-disciplinary artist. The art market accelerates into a higher gear this month, too, beginning with the closing days of the India Art Fair in Delhi and Rotterdam Art Week (both until 4 February). Following closely behind is the 20th edition of Zona Maco in Mexico City (7-11 February) and then Frieze Los Angeles (29 February-4 Mach) closes out the month’s fair calendar.
