A Young Girl by Jean-Honoré Fragonard Rediscovered
The reappearance of a previously unknown work by Jean-Honoré Fragonard is in many ways the answer to an enigma, one that we can only guess at but never fully grasp.
Auction on 21 December 2023 - 14:00 (CET) - Salle 4 - Hôtel Drouot - 75009
The reappearance of a previously unknown work by Jean-Honoré Fragonard is in many ways the answer to an enigma, one that we can only guess at but never fully grasp.
Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806), Jeune fille au chapeau (Young Girl With a Hat), canvas, 52 x 42.5 cm/20.4 x 16.5 in. Estimate: €400,00/600,000
In 2021, the Philosophe Lisant ( A Philosopher Reading ) made a lasting impression and heated up the bidding at the Épernay auction house, where it sold for €7.6 million to a French collector. Two years later, the discovery of its "fantasy pendant" is almost as exciting, all the more so as it could herald a cascade of new Fragonard discoveries in the years to come. Fa Presto! At the Salon of 1767, it is possible Jean-Honoré Fragonard was aware of what Diderot thought of him: "Fragonard has the makings of a skilful man, but he's not; he's feisty, incorrect and his color volatile". The painter from Grasse embraced this characterization , and his rapid, "esquissé" style became a feat, of which the "Figures de fantaisie" (Fantasy Figures) were his most famous achievement, as demonstrated by the ancient labels affixed behind the Portrait de La Bretèche and the Portrait de l'abbé de Saint-Non (Paris, Musée du Louvre), "painted by Fragonard in 1769, in one hour's time". The fa presto and virtuosity of the Philosophe Lisant and the Jeune fille au chapeau ( Young Girl With a Hat ) are part of the same playful process. This new…

A painting by the great Jean-Honoré Fragonard was discovered by Mr. Petit, in Épernay, and the Cabinet Turquin. This Philosopher has not been seen since 1779, and gets spring off to a spanking start.
Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806), Un Philosophe lisant (A Philosopher Reading), original oval canvas, 45.8 x 57 cm (18 x 22.4 in), in its original frame with the Chartier stamp. Estimate: €1.5/2 M
Many still remember the morning of March 4, 1998, at the Hôtel Drouot, when a famous "eagle eye" of the Quai Voltaire recognized Fragonard's yellow in an extremely dirty canvas hanging from a half-broken frame. He immediately made the connection with a sketch by Saint-Aubin in the margin of the 1776 Verrier catalog, picked up the phone to inform the powers that be, obtained a veto in a matter of seconds—budget no obstacle—and this sale with no catalog went down as an international event a few hours later. Fragonard's Saint Pierre pénitent ( Saint Peter the Penitent ), which fetched FF8 million, thus made a majestic comeback after an absence of 222 years. It took 240 years for the old man here to show his face again... All hope of finding him had died. Although the dealer…
In Paris, the Éric Coatalem Gallery is exhibiting 50 paintings and drawings by Jean-Honoré Fragonard: exceptional and sometimes first-time loans from private collectors, which explore little-known facets of an artist who produced both romantic and other types of scenes.
Self-Portrait with Two Circles After Rembrandt, 1773, brush, brown wash and black chalk on laid paper, 27.2 x 21.7 cm/10.7 x 8.5 in (detail)P
In late 2019, shortly before the pandemic, the Éric Coatalem Gallery devoted a temporary display to 17th-century French still lifes. "The gallery was packed every day," the dealer says happily. "It was a delight and a joy to discover that visitors liked to observe and even knew the works. There was a lot of discussion and interest. So I decided that once every 18 months, I would try to show a leading 18th-century artist—Greuze, Boucher , Vigée Le Brun among others. For the second event (following "Hubert Robert: From Rome to Paris", in 2021), the spotlight is on Fragonard , represented by some 50 works, 45 being loans from private collectors. Only five works are for sale. Nineteen collectors agreed to lend their treasures, mostly from London, Madrid, Brussels, Switzerland and the US. Some paintings, jealously guarded by their owners, have not been seen for half a century and not even shown in their respective countries. Convincing the lenders was not the most difficult part, as they usually agreed instantly. But finding them and contacting them was "a lengthy but fascinating…
