Before there was Cara, there was Brooke. And if there's one person we can thank for guiding the eyebrow-grooming decisions of our teens, it's Brooke Shields.

    The '90s saw dark times: Eyebrows were too arched, drawn on, and plucked into oblivion. And while nearly everyone fell into this tweeze-happy trap, Shields maintained the bold, natural brows that made her famous in the '80s. But brows aren't the only thing she was known for; a risqué role in Pretty Baby put her on the map. And controversy didn't end there. Calvin Klein, never afraid to push boundaries with provocative campaigns and a growing list of banned ads, called on her in 1980 for a jeans ad. Who can forget a 15-year-old Shields declaring, "You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing." The world gasped, then went on to buy denim in droves—and a supermodel was born. A still-stunning Shields, who turns 50 today, moved away from the shock and awe of her early years. She graduated from Princeton with a degree in French literature, headlined as a magazine writer in the TV sitcom Suddenly Susan, starred on Broadway, and shined a light on mental-health issues by publicizing her battle with postpartum depression. To an iconic American beauty, we put down our tweezers and brush up our brows in your honor today. Happy birthday, Brooke!
