Those impatient to see Adrian Piper’s first American museum exhibition in more than 10 years at the Museum of Modern Art this spring can get a taste of the Conceptual artist’s bold philosophical work in an exhibition that opened Thursday at Lévy Gorvy Gallery.
The show — the gallery’s first solely devoted to Ms. Piper — includes examples from the artist’s “Mythic Being” series (1973–1975), which uses mediums like street performances and posters to explore personas that perpetuate stereotypes. Sporting sunglasses, an Afro and a mustache, for example, she confronts the clichés of blaxploitation films.
The exhibition also features Ms. Piper’s 1980 multimedia piece, “It’s Just Art,” about the Cambodian genocide by the Khmer Rouge and her 2008 site-specific installation “Here,” which consists of three statements — “I was here,” “We were here,” “We are here” — engraved in Arabic, English and Hebrew. Through Oct. 21, 909 Madison Ave, levygorvy.com.
