SUMMER UNIFORM

A Time-Honored Look, No Effort Required

“I have a tried-and-true uniform that I can throw on when I wake up and wear all day without trying too hard,” said the designer Jeff Halmos, whom fashion fans know as a founder of the much-missed men’s wear brands Trovata and Shipley & Halmos.
A staple of Mr. Halmos’s look is a pima-cotton crew-neck T-shirt from the Swedish fashion chain COS. “The color palette is nice, the fabric is soft, and they’re well priced,” he said.
Mr. Halmos, who lives in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, added that going with a daily uniform makes sense for him now that he is the father of two small children. “One thing that really changed with kids is my unwillingness to make an effort to look cool on a daily basis,” he said. His usual outfit includes jeans and sneakers to go with the COS T-shirt. “It requires little thought, always looks good — even with random pieces of food from the kids crusted to it — and most importantly, for a dad, is comfortable,” Mr. Halmos added.
Last year, with his wife, the designer Lisa Mayock, he started a brand, Monogram, that specializes in ’80s-inspired T-shirts for women.

Denim for Men on the Move

The Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo — the four-time world soccer player of the year — has long been on the lookout for the right pair of bluejeans. And now the search is over, for Mr. Ronaldo has started his own line, CR7 Denim.
“I’ve always struggled to find stylish jeans that also allowed me to move freely without restriction,” he said by email. “As a football player, I understand movement very well and all the ways that apparel can limit or enhance that movement. I think that understanding gave me a real edge when it came to shaping the CR7 Denim line.”
With a range of jeans in five different fits from “modern straight” to “painted-on skinny,” the soccer star’s collection will also include woven shirts, denim jackets and shorts. The line will start at $88 and will go up to $144 for the more premium pieces.

Sleep Tight

What happens when two former architects decide to design bed linens, towels and pajamas? Cleverly Laundry, a new bedding and loungewear brand founded by Amelia McPhee and Roshana Lewis. The brand uses superfine cotton and terry toweling from Guimarães, a city in Portugal with a long history of producing linens. An e-commerce site will make it easy to shop for home essentials, including towels ($95 to $165) and bed linens ($550 to $590).

A Grooming Kit for Summer

For a lucky few, summertime represents a respite from the cold. For the rest of us, it means one bad hair day after another. The men’s hair stylist Martial Vivot, who works out of his Martial Vivot Salon Pour Hommes in Midtown Manhattan, knows how it is, and he has come up with a kit to conquer almost any hair challenge.
He has one summer-centric tip: “When it gets warmer, you need to be mindful of how much styling product you put in your hair. Since you’re more inclined to sweat, you don’t want to use too much.” Mr. Vivot plans to open a second salon in Greenwich Village this summer.

'Mario Testino: Undressed' opens at the Helmet Newton Foundation

54 larger-than-life images are affixed directly to the walls in three of the Foundation’s exhibition halls, reaching into the corners of the room and up to the ceiling, filling the rooms with bodies and emotions to create an imposing human landscape.

BERLIN.- Mario Testino’s new exhibition explores the physical notion of undressing through photography and film that blurs the boundaries between eroticism, anatomy and art. Conceived exclusively for the Helmut Newton Foundation, this immersive, large scale exhibition is on view until November 19.

“Helmut Newton was a big inspiration for me. He did it all in his own way and out of his own fantasies, so it is an honour to be exhibiting at his Foundation,” says Testino.

Exploring the physical notion of undressing, the exhibition also acts as a metaphorical undressing of Testino, that goes beyond the public perception and delves deeper into his archive, and his working practice. 54 larger-than-life images are affixed directly to the walls in three of the Foundation’s exhibition halls, reaching into the corners of the room and up to the ceiling, filling the rooms with bodies and emotions to create an imposing human landscape.

A special highlight is series of previously unseen photographs shot in the Testino studio. In this deeply personal work, an exuberant atmosphere intermingles with the implicit frisson of nudity, and while playfully amorous, the dynamics never slip into the obscene or pornographic. Honouring the influence of Helmut Newton, the images become abstracted body landscapes, the protagonists appearing as mere forms, torsos, even statues.

Testino has elevated fashion photography into the realm of art. Consistent with his wider practice, the origins of his work lie in Old Master paintings, as much as the history of photography. Many of the images may be seen to redefine masculine paradigms, in the same way that Newton created his own brand of female beauty.

Alongside the exhibition, the Foundation’s cinema room is showing a unique short film entitled Undressing The Mind. This shows Testino in conversation with psychoanalyst Kai Hammermeister. In their exchange, Testino and Hammermeister analyse the root of Testino’s fascination with the human form, and Testino opens up about love and intimacy. The film is interspersed with images from Testino’s body of work, and gives the viewer a unique insight into his mind.

Undressed is supported by a catalogue, published by TASCHEN, documenting the exhibition and features a unique conversation between Testino and long-time collaborator Carine Roitfeld. Also included is an essay from psychiatrist and psychologist Manfred Spitzer, who offers a neuroscientific perspective on humanities visual perception of bodies and beauty. The catalogue is priced at £24.99.
