#ArtnetNews: The entrepreneur and philanthropist Jennifer Gilbert is selling Modernist masterpieces from her personal collection to fund Lumana, the Detroit-based nonprofit arts organization she founded in 2025.

The small group of high-value works will be spread across a series of spring auctions at Sotheby’s New York, including its Now and Contemporary evening sale on May 14, its Contemporary day sale on May 15, and its Important Design sale in June. The offload aims to raise north of $10 million for the institution located in Stanton Yards, on Detroit’s East Village riverfront.

The leading lot is Joan Mitchell’s Loom II (1976), a thicket of greens and blues that dates from the Abstract Expressionist’s exuberant period in which she channelled the vibrancy of the surrounding French countryside. It holds an estimate of $5 million to $7 million and previously sold at Christie’s New York in 2013 for just over $1 million.

Not sure who is the authority on art valuation but Joan Mitchell should be selling for 40-50 million. Women artists are making headway but not fast enough to gain parity with male artists of their generation.

It's a minimalist approach to solving a fundamental problem......

Loom II going from about 1M USD in 2013 to a 5-7M USD estimate in 2026 mirrors the entire Mitchell market — her pre-1980 works have compounded faster than her late large-scale canvases, against most predictions from a decade ago.
