A young couple moves into an expensive new apartment after the husband gets a big pay raise. Unfortunately, he is soon stricken with a mysterious ailment and becomes bedridden. The wife is unable to find a job, and with the bills piling up, she runs into a seedy pump who suggests a way in which she could make a lot of money in a short time.

Doris had some fun with the cinematography. From the opening scene filmed in Central Park, I somehow knew the whole film was going to be lovelier and I was put at ease. I think that this must have been an influence on John Michael McCarthy in making Superstarlet AD, or any of his films probably. Similar silhouettes and voice-overs. You can reduce a film to it's shadows and voices to measure it's greatness.

The most amusing yet infuriating detail is that our leading lady has to keep her marriage a secret because "her boss doesn't want married women in the office". ACTUAL LOL, but also OUCH, for real?? It's not funny but it's hard not to laugh at the absurdity of that being almost for sure a real scenario. Naturally, she becomes a prostitute. That's the answer to every problem in a Doris Wishman movie.

On a more serious note, I think it's interesting that in all of these films a woman has the foundation of what she perceives to be a perfect life. A new marriage, a loving husband...and she loses it all. Doris started making films immediately after the untimely death of her husband. Knowing this adds some depth that shouldn't go unnoticed. In the wake of tragedy she carved out a legacy for herself. It's brave and noble as fuck, I admire her endlessly.
