Observational Photography

Gianni Berengo Gardin
Born in Santa Margherita Ligure in 1930, Gianni Berengo Gardin has produced more than 200 books and exhibitions in his 60-year career. One of Italy’s most celebrated photographers at work today, Berengo Gardin documents life around him with both precision and spontaneity. His images often transform the normality of the everyday into captivating portraits with many layers of detail. He is recognised for his work across the world, winning a prize in the World Press Photo contest in 1963, followed by the Leica Oskar Barnack Award in 1995 and Lifetime Achievement by the Lucie Foundation in 2008. Having also lived in Rome, Venice and Milan, Berengo Gardin is an avid photographer of his native country, and his images of post-war Italy appear at Prahlad Bubbar Gallery, London, from 11 April until 23 May, along with a collection of works recorded in India. The following shots are taken from the exhibition and a self-titled book from Contrasto and Thames & Hudson.
