A number of records have been made and broken in 2018 and several valuable classic cars have been sold at the auction in the past year. In all, one can say it was a big year for classic-car auctions. As the year 2018 has recently ended, let us have a look at some of the most expensive classic cars sold last year.
As per the report by automobilemag.com, “It’s also worth noting that Canadian auction house RM Sotheby’s isn’t just responsible for the top two sellers on our list, it lays claim to fully half of them, with California-based Gooding & Company and U.K.-headquartered Bonhams picking up the remaining five cars between them. RM Sotheby’s reported that it sold $423 million in cars and memorabilia this year, while rival Gooding & Company sold some $201 million. Bonhams has not yet released its annual sales total.”
Having topped the list, 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO that was sold in August 2018, at RM Sotheby’s in Monterey, at a whooping price of $48,405,000 became the most expensive car ever sold at auction. Next in the list is 1956 Ferrari 290 MM that was presented at the auction at RM Sotheby’s, Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles and it was sold at a high price of $22,005,000.
1935 Duesenberg SSJ also made its place in the list of the most expensive classic cars. It was sold by Gooding & Company in Pebble Beach, for an amount of $22,000,000. According to a report by automobilemag.com, “This Duesenberg SSJ is one of just two ever commissioned cars and its first owner was actor Gary Cooper. Legend has it that when Clark Gable saw Cooper’s SSJ, he had to have one for himself and that’s how the second car was built. The SSJ was essentially a 1930s supercar and this one is the most valuable American car ever sold at auction.”
Next in the list is 1963 Aston Martin DP215 Grand Touring Competition Prototype that was auctioned at RM Sotheby’s, Monterey and was sold for $21,455,000. Some of the other top expensive classic cars in this list include, 1961 Aston Martin MP209 DB4GT Zagato ‘2 VEV,’ sold by Bonhams at Goodwood Festival of Speed, for an amount of $13,302,239, 1966 Ford GT40 Mk II that was sold at RM Sotheby’s, Monterey for $9,795,000, 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB Speciale auctioned by Gooding & Company in Scottsdale, for $8,085,000, 1958 Ferrari 250 GT TdF, sold by Gooding & Company in Pebble Beach for $6,600,000 and 1985 Porsche 959 Paris-Dakar sold at Porsche 70th Anniversary Sale, by RM Sotheby’s in Atlanta for $5,945,000.
