Artnet’s Henri Neuendorf reports:
Chinese art collector Liu Yiqian has added a massive Gerhard Richter painting to his collection. The billionaire posted a photo of himself posing in front of the German artist’s 36-foot-wide 930-7 Strip on the popular Chinese social media platform WeChat. Chantal Crousel
- Wade Guyton, “Untitled,” in Epson Ultra-Chrome K-3 Inkjet on linen and measuring 128 by 108 ¼ inches, sold in the opening moments of the preview for $600,000 to a French collector.
- a previously unexhibited Rudolf Stingel patterned abstraction from 2014 for somewhere around the $1.8 million asking price, also to a European collector.
- “Super Blue Omo,” a 2016 unframed figurative work by the 32-year-old Nigerian-born, L.A painter Akunyili Crosby sold to an otherwise unidentified American museum for an otherwise indeterminate five-figure price.
- The gallery also sold all the Yayoi Kusama works it had on display, including two 2016 acrylics on canvas — “Self-Portrait,” measuring 51 ¼ by 38 ¼ inches, and “Infinity Nets (ORSTW)” — and the 2012 editioned cast-bronze “Pumpkin (s),” at prices ranging from $350,000 to $1 million.

- Tauba Auerbach’s 2016 primary market abstraction “Grain: Sierpinski” for around $200,000
- Donald Judd’s 1969 single stack with green Plexiglas “Untitled,” for approximately $1 million
- two collage-based works from Christian Marclay’s “Body Mix” series — the 1991 “No Heavy Petting” and the 1992 “Skin tight”— for approximately $200,000 apiece.
- Douglas Huebler’s 1973 über-Conceptual work “Duration Piece #77 to a Latin America-based foundation for approximately $200,000.
- an untitled Rudolf Stingel triptych for a sum that remains undisclosed, in deference to the artist’s aversion to divulging prices.
- Making approximately $500,000 each were three large figurative works by Georg Baselitz, including the 2015 120-by-82-inch “Hohne Hemd auf der Matratze liegen,” executed in oil on linen and portraying an upside-down male nude minus his head.
- Romanian-born market hot shot Adrian Ghenie’s 2016 painting “Degenerate Art,” measuring 200 by 172 centimeters, brought $400,000.
- Robert Rauschenberg’s 1983 “Untitled (Spread),” in solvent transfer, fabric collage, acrylic, and wood-on-wood panel, went for approximately $1 million.

- Two McCarthy works on the booth also sold: ‘Michael Jackson Inflatable Drawings’ (2003) for USD 650,000 and the unique sculpture ‘WS, White Snow Flower Girl #3’ (2016) for USD 575,000.
- Vija Celmins drawing, ‘Sea Drawing with Whale’ (1969) sold for in excess of USD 1,500,000.
- Maria Lassnig painting, ‘Macht des Schicksals (The Power of Fate)’ (2006) and ‘Das Traumpaar (The Dream Couple)’ from 2004 sold for USD 1,200,000 and EUR 550,000 respectively.
- A brand new video work by Pipilotti Rist, ‘Sole’ (2016), sold for USD 120,000.
- A new work by Zoe Leonard, ‘American Falls from Below’ (2016), sold for USD 120,000.
- Lee Lozano‘s ‘No title’ (1962) sold for USD 280,000.
- A Philip Guston 1968 acrylic on panel was also placed early, and Dieter Roth’s ‘Materialbild’ (1986 – 1989) has gone to a Swiss private collection. These are in addition to sales of several works not on the booth.
Blue & Poe
- sold a Julian Schnabel, Painting Without Bingo II, for the $375k
- works by Bridget Riley, Luc Tuymans, Bruce Nauman, and Josef Albers all went to Asian collectors.
- The gallery also sold two works by Giorgio Morandi for over $1 million each.
