M.I.A’s just dropped a new politically-charged video for ‘Borders’. Never one to be indirect, M.I.A. took a very literal approach to a song about borders by rallying hundreds of desolate and impoverished looking individuals over barbed wire fencing and into the sea. The self-directed video is perhaps one of the most open statements from a musician regarding the worsening refugee crisis, and time will tell if others are as vocal as her with their views on the situation.
The video is rife with the kind of imagery that gets very quickly gif’d and virally circulated – it will be everywhere soon – and while it’s not quite as visually impactful as some of her other previous videos (and where were all the women?), it does have M.I.A. casually rapping atop a human pyramid and walking on water too. Bad Girls do it well eh?
And when you’ve finished watching “Borders”, reminisce with the below classics.
