In The New York Times Book Review, Ruth Padawer reviews Jennifer Latson’s “The Boy Who Loved Too Much: A True Story of Pathological Friendliness.” Padawer writes:
Imagine having a child who is extremely gregarious, generous and filled with boundless joy.It might seem like a parent’s dream, but it’s not easy raising a child with the rare genetic accident that causes such exuberant affection, partly because that affection is so undiscriminating. Called Williams syndrome, the condition eliminates the skepticism and social caution that seem hard-wired into most other human beings. Instead, people with Williams typically have an insatiable urge to befriend, trust and touch everyone, even strangers, a social overdrive that leaves them vulnerable to disdain and exploitation.
On this week’s podcast, Latson talks about “The Boy Who Loved Too Much”; Daniel Menaker discusses two new books about how to understand others and make ourselves understood; Alexandra Alter has news from the literary world; and Gregory Cowles, Parul Sehgal and John Williams on what people are reading. Pamela Paul is the host.
Here are the books mentioned in this week’s “What We’re Reading”:
“The Art of Fact” edited by Kevin Kerrane and Ben Yagoda
“Under the Glacier” by Halldor Laxness
“Do Not Become Alarmed” by Maile Meloy
“The Egg and I” by Betty MacDonald
“The Bright Hour” by Nina Riggs
