Dear Travel Fans,

I hope that you had a safe and restorative Thanksgiving, wherever you decided to celebrate. The travel world feels like it’s standing on the cusp — but of what, it’s not quite clear. The vaccine news has some people booking vacations for later in 2021, while airlines say they’ve seen a spike in cancellations recently.

One of the biggest questions that people have is: Is it safe to fly? A number of studies have said it’s relatively low risk, so Tariro Mzezewa took a look at the science. Her informative article will have you understanding airplane airflow and the risk points that you might face if you decide to fly.

There are a lot of Black Friday travel deals out there, with many of them on offer longer than the usual one-day window. Elaine Glusac, our Frugal Traveler, provides a strategy for deciding whether it’s worth booking or not. She also looked at the state of travel insurance — many companies have updated their policies and are now offering coverage for Covid-19.

Our series on the pandemic ski season continues with a primer on the eight new rules of skiing you’ll need to follow if you plan to hit the slopes, a guide to some lesser-known mountains where you might find it easier to stay socially distant and a round-up of backcountry trails across the country — some people are calling this the winter of backcountry.

Our weekly photo essay touches down in a remote region of Portugal and for armchair travelers we’ve got everything you need to visit Hawaii without leaving home.

I hope you and your families stay safe and well,

Amy Virshup
