Pope Francis Reveals What He Thinks About Art in New Film
Pope Francis. My idea of art
Pope Francis reveals his thoughts on art and its function in a new documentary titled “Pope Francis. My idea of art.” Based on the book of the same name, which was written by the Pope in conjunction with Tiziana Lupi and published by Mondadori and Edizioni Musei Vaticani in December 2015, the documentary explores the Pope’s concept of art.
Pope Francis has said: “The Vatican Museums have to be the most beautiful place and the most hospitable. It must throw open its doors to the world. They must be an instrument of dialogue between cultures and religions, a tool of peace, not a dusty collections of the past only for the ‘elect’ and the ‘wise’ but a vital reality that can keep that past telling it to men today, beginning with the humble ones.”
According to the documentary website, “Pope Francis. My idea of art” translates into images the personal thoughts of the Holy Father on art and its function, exemplifying his concept of what art is and what it should be: a credible witness to the beauty of creation, a tool of evangelization, and an instrument to counter the throwaway culture.
Guided by Tiziana Lupi and Sandro Barbagallo, the documentary takes viewers on a tour of the Vatican Museums, Saint Peter Square, and the Vatican Basilica, following an itinerary suggested by Pope Francis who has singled out 11 works that “express his conception of an art that evangelizes and opposes the throwaway culture.”
The Highlighted works include the Belvedere Torso, the St. Peter Obelisk, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, “The Works of Mercy,” the sculptures “Il Buon Pastore,” “La dea che allatta un bambino”, and “San Pietro in Cattedra,” Caravaggio’s “The Deposition”, “Christ the Worker” and “The Virgen de Luján” by Alejandro Marmo, as well as the Renault 4 donated to the Pontiff by Don Renzo Zocca.
“Pope Francis. My idea of art” is directed by Claudio Rossi Massimi, written by Tiziana Lupi, produced by the Vatican Museums, realized by Imago Film, and distributed by Corrado Azzollini and Giulio Violati for Draka Distribution. The DVD documentary is subtitled in six languages and will be distributed in Italy and throughout the rest of the world in the coming months.
