“Alexa, play Rankin’s greatest hits.”

We’re living in strange times, but as David Bowie once described it - the power of music is “sustaining”. From iconic album covers to timeless editorials, music has always been at the heart of Rankin’s work. So we wanted to take a behind-the-lens look at some of his most iconic on-set moments.

When speaking with the man himself, he said: “Going back through my archive, the funniest thing I came across was how many of these images the artists didn’t like at the time. But now, how those same images seem to embody them perfectly.”

BJÖRK
The first of many…

Shot for Dazed & Confused in 1994, Björk was the first serious musical artist that Rankin ever photographed. Captured on St. Alban’s Road, the setting of Rankin’s teenage years, these images set the blueprint for many of the shoots to come.

GEORGE MICHAEL

One man and his dog

In 1998, now one of the world’s leading solo artists, George Michael was photographed by Rankin as part of an editorial for Q Magazine. This image captures a loving moment between Michael and his dog, Abby.

PHARRELL WILLIAMS

King of the beats

Marking the music mogul’s rise to greatness, Rankin met Pharrell in 2003 for a now iconic Dazed cover shoot. As part of the shoot’s concept, Pharrell was offered the chance to speak to the most important person in his musical development - jazz, funk and soul legend Roy Ayers.

SPICE GIRLS

Wannabe no more

It isn’t often you get to be part of a true cultural phenomenon, but when shooting the Spice Girls for The Big Issue in 1996 - Rankin got to do just that. Spicing up Rankin’s portfolio, this shoot took the world by storm - with some images even appearing on birthday cakes!

KYLIE

God bless Kylie

Pull up a pew and open ‘The Kylie Bible’. The pop legend was set to grace the cover of Dazed in 1994, but Rankin didn’t want to just do the obvious. So he created a supplement concept that spoke to the new cool of the nineties - hallelujah!

AZEALIA BANKS

All eyes on Azealia

In 2014 Rankin was called on to shoot Azealia Banks’ debut album cover. Inspired by the 212 star’s tendency to speak her mind, ‘The Broke With Expensive Taste’ shoot celebrates a fearless femininity; embodying Azealia’s attitude to a T.

DUA LIPA

The new face of pop

What keeps Rankin shooting is the idea of capturing the next big thing - and that’s exactly what happened when he met Dua Lipa in 2016. At the time of the cover shoot for Hunger Magazine, Dua - now one of the biggest names in pop - was sitting on the cusp of stardom.

BLUR

What in the Warhol?

Where Britpop meets pop art, Issue 56 of Dazed & Confused - published in 1999 - saw a culture clashing cover that featured colourful portraits of one of the biggest bands of the decade.

PULP

Cut it out

Pulp and Rankin joined forces to promote the band’s fifth album ‘Different Class’. Shot in 1995, the collaboration consisted of travelling the UK with cardboard cutouts to create some of the most iconic imagery in the band’s history.

KELIS

Dancing in the desert

No stranger to music videos, Rankin collaborated with Kelis on the stunning video for her single ‘4th of July (Fireworks)’. Filmed in the desert just outside of Los Angeles, the video sees the ethereal Kelis performing in everything from serene waters to fierce fires.

ROBYN

Colour me Cobrastyle

For Robyn’s cover of the Teddybears’ classic ‘Cobrastyle’, Rankin created an explosive video that champions colour and creativity. Watch as Robyn and her band transform from wearing all-white-everything into walking works of art.
