We live in a time when we are told all women are sisters, that there is no such thing as beauty or love, those are just heterosexist inventions. Why any man can just go under the knife and he will have the intuition, thought processes and gatherer instincts of a woman. If a man appreciates a woman’s beauty, he is just a victim of the male gaze. The same gaze he would give a work of art, but in this age we destroy art, don’t we? There is no magic to being a woman today, we are at last finally equal.

Or are we? Do we treat beautiful people differently than people who aren’t? Sometimes all it takes to shake up our modern version of eugenics is to see Elle Fanning on the red carpet:

Is there still magic in the world? The last time we tried to control women, change human beings and bottle up sexuality the result was Adolf Hitler. I doubt this new attempt to control and change biology will work well either. Because women like Ava Gardner exist who don’t really care what society thinks. Consider:

The students at St. Paul The Apostle school filed into class for homeroom and over the loudspeakers were told there would be a prayer for Frank Sinatra to return to his wife Nancy and leave Ava Gardner. In Catholic schools across America that morning, students bowed their heads and prayed Sinatra would leave Ava.

The Legion of Decency sent a letter to the film studio warning that a ban could be placed on all Sinatra's films. Current and present films. Priests were urged to have their congregations write to Ava to convince her to leave him. It was 1950.

As if Ava gave a damn what the Catholic Church thought. Ava was bisexual, and she and Lana Turner liked to go out and pick up men and women for threesomes. The tabloids all knew, but they were such huge stars they got away with it, when other actresses such as Paulette Goddard had their careers ruined when the truth came out.

The books film noirs were based on were written during the dark days of the depression in the 1920’s and 1930’s. The phrase “film noir” was unknown the films were called crime thrillers. But they were very different from the crime stories prior to World War 2. Women during the depression with no jobs had to survive. You won’t find any books about it, no gender classes at college as to what women had to do to survive, but it is worth noting that women took many factory jobs that had been men’s domain and earned their own paycheck- which stopped when men returned from the war. It is also with noting that the VD rate was the highest it has ever been in the U.S., and soldiers were not getting leave to come home from abroad. Their own jobs, their own paychecks and their own sex lives. To men the femme fatale was the woman far more experienced than he was, whose beauty and sexual power could make him willingly destroy himself.

Ava Gardner’s every movement in Ernest Hemingway’s THE KILLERS shows a woman aware of her sexual power. Her body is her weapon, and she carries it as if it were loaded. You can see the film here:

LESLIE BROOKS (1922 – 2011), who you can see in the film noir classic BLONDE ICE playing the sleaziest femme fatale in the history of noir.

Blonde Ice stars Leslie Brooks as the bad girl, and the fact she is bad begins with the opening scene. She is so bad, you may need to take a shower after seeing the film! She takes femme fatale to a whole new level. The book it was based on was actually written in the 1930's ( as were many film noirs) and during the depression millions of women were out of work. There were limits to how far a woman could go to get work, so getting married became the way to move up the social ladder and no one is as ruthless at it as Leslie Brooks. All jokes aside, she does an incredible acting job here.

A society reporter (Leslie Brooks) keeps herself in the headlines by marrying a series of wealthy men, all of whom die under mysterious circumstances. Leslie Brooks is great, as a man hating society dame that turns her loathing into a profitable side business. Offbeat noir deserves a second look..
